SAGHAR SIDDIQUI
Saghar Siddiqui, the Pakistani Urdu poet, born in Ambala (British India) in 1928, was a renowned saint poet who gained popularity with his slim appearance, wearing yellow silky cloth shirts and reciting beautiful ghazals in a melodious voice. He migrated to Pakistan in 1947 and settled in Lahore, where he wrote poetry for the film industry and published a literary magazine. However, his magazine was a critical success but a commercial flop, leading him to shut it down. Siddiqui fell into depression, became financially ruined and addicted to drugs, and chose to stay in cheap hotels, rather than settle into a house given by the government to refugees. He lived on the streets of Lahore, where he held mushairas on the footpaths, in candlelight, and continued to write poems until his death. Siddiqui was found dead on a street corner of Lahore at age 46, and his dog also died a year later, reportedly at the same spot. Despite his tragic life, his dhamaal song 'Laal Mori Pat Rakhio Bhala Jhoole Laalan De' and ghazal 'Hei Dua Yaad Magar Harf-e-Dua Yaad Nahin' are still popular today.

ایک وعدہ ہے کسی کا جو وفا ہوتا نہیں
ورنہ ان تاروں بھری راتوں میں کیا ہوتا نہیں
جی میں آتا ہے الٹ دیں ان کے چہرے سے نقاب
حوصلہ کرتے ہیں لیکن حوصلہ ہوتا نہیں
شمع جس کی آبرو پر جان دے دے جھوم کر
وہ پتنگا جل تو جاتا ہے فنا ہوتا نہیں
اب تو مدت سے رہ و رسمِ نظارہ بند ہے
اب تو ان کا طور پر بھی سامنا ہوتا نہیں
ہر شناور کو نہیں ملتا تلاطم سے خراج
ہر سفینے کا محافظ ناخدا ہوتا نہیں
ہر بھکاری پا نہیں سکتا مقامِ خواجگی
ہر کس و ناکس کو تیرا غم عطا ہوتا نہیں
ہائے یہ بیگانگی اپنی نہیں مجھ کو خبر
ہائے یہ عالم کہ تو دل سے جدا ہوتا نہیں
بارہا دیکھا ہے ساغرؔ رہ گزارِ عشق میں
کارواں کے ساتھ اکثر رہنما ہوتا نہیں

ek va.ada hai kisī kā jo vafā hotā nahīñ
varna in tāroñ bharī rātoñ meñ kyā hotā nahīñ
jī meñ aatā hai ulaT deñ un ke chehre se naqāb
hausla karte haiñ lekin hausla hotā nahīñ
sham.a jis kī aabrū par jaan de de jhuum kar
vo patiñgā jal to jaatā hai fanā hotā nahīñ
ab to muddat se rah-o-rasm-e-nazāra band hai
ab to un kā tuur par bhī sāmnā hotā nahīñ
har shanāvar ko nahīñ miltā talātum se ḳhirāj
har safīne kā muhāfiz nāḳhudā hotā nahīñ
har bhikārī pā nahīñ saktā maqām-e-ḳhvājgī
har kas-o-nā-kas ko terā ġham atā hotā nahīñ
haa.e ye begānagī apnī nahīñ mujh ko ḳhabar
haa.e ye aalam ki tū dil se judā hotā nahīñ
bārhā dekhā hai 'sāġhar' rahguzār ishq meñ
kārvāñ ke saath aksar rahnumā hotā nahīñ
