The glucose molecules transported into the cells of islets of Langerhans are rapidly metabolized to produce ATP which in turn close the ATP sensitive potassium K channels. Closure of K channels results opening of voltage sensitive calcium Ca channels. Ca ions stimulate the release of insulin hormones from its storage vesicles. Sulfonylurea drugs block K channels which ultimately leads to increase the secretion of stored insulin hormones
