Upon entering the portal in Xen, Gordon arrives on another floating Xenian island inhabited by a Gonarch, the only one found in the game. The Gonarch immediately attacks Gordon, and after a long battle which traverses much of the island, the Gonarch is finally defeated. In its dying throes, it breaks open the floor of its lair and exposes a portal which leads to the next chapter, Interloper.
Gonarch's Lair is the sixteenth chapter of Half-Life.
As the player deals damage to the Gonarch, it retreats to other areas of its lair, breaking open impassible barriers as it goes. Aside from the Gonarch, the enemies encountered in this chapter are Headcrabs and Baby Headcrabs. The hoards of Baby Headcrabs spawned by the Gonarch provide a unique gameplay challenge, as they move quickly and are difficult to hit due to their size.
