After escaping from the waste facility in Residue Processing, Gordon Freeman finds himself in a secret part of the facility, previously used by the Black Mesa Research Team to research alien specimens, now known as the Biodome Complex. Here, Gordon realizes that Black Mesa had been making trips to this alien world even before the Resonance Cascade. Here he encounters the first Alien Grunt, encased in a glass pod located in the Environmental Hazards Testing Labs. Gordon finds a security guard, who tells him that a scientist with sufficient clearance is needed to operate the retinal scanner that will lead them outside and to the Lambda Labs.

As the chapter progresses, Gordon travels through the various laboratories encountering the aftermath of the Marines' cleansing operation, eventually discovering the highly experimental Tau Cannon within the Optronics Laboratories. The Tau Cannon is acquired by Gordon when a security guard misuses it, killing himself and a scientist while barricaded inside a test room.

Finally, Gordon finds three scientists with retinal scanner access hiding out in the Autopsy Labs guarded by a malfunctioning surgical unit. Gordon must cross the room, evading the machine, and reach the control panel on the other side of the room in order to switch it off, clearing the way for the scientists to open the main lab doors.

Questionable Ethics is the eleventh chapter of Half-Life.

Questionable Ethics is designed around two major principles: exploration and story expansion. It acts as an eye opening chapter for the player, a realization that not everything is as it seems at Black Mesa, and that unethical experiments on recovered specimens are regular occurrences in the deeper, more restricted sections of the facility.
