What is Spondylosis? Neurosurgeon and a Spine Surgeon from Bangalore India, Dr Arun L Naik sheds light on spondylosis. Spondylosis causes neck pain and back pain. Spondylosis signs and symptoms depend on the site of compression in the spine. Spondylosis treatment consists of medications, physical therapy and surgery. It can happen anywhere in the back bone. When it happens in the neck it is called cervical spondylosis and when it happens in the low back we call it lumbar spondylosis. When we get aged, our disks dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony spurs along the edges of bones (called osteophytes). Generally when used alone spondylosis means neck problem that is cervical spondylosis.Cervical spondylosis is very common and worsens with age. More than 80 percent of people older than age 60 are affected by cervical spondylosis. Most people have no symptoms from these problems. When symptoms do occur, nonsurgical treatments often are effective.

Seek medical attention if you notice a sudden onset of numbness or weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.What causes spondylosis?As told earlier, As you age, the bones and cartilage that make up your backbone and neck gradually develop wear and tear. There are four causes for spondylosis. In any given patient one or more of these can cause the pain.
1.Dehydrated disks.
2.Herniated disks.
3.Bone spurs.
4.Stiff ligaments.
Treatment
Treatment for cervical spondylosis depends on the severity of your signs and symptoms. The idea is to relieve pain, help you maintain your daily activities as much as possible, and prevent permanent injury to the spinal cord and nerves.First line of treatment is Medications. When all these measures fail, i may consider Surgery in some patients. Out of 100 patients i advise surgery may be only in 5 patients.
