"Pied Wagtail in Herts"

It's usually this time of the year that we welcome back a "celebrity" to our garden, a pied wagtail that we have nicknamed the "sgt major" because of his bossy attitude... we see him over the winter months, usually with his partner and earlier this year a young male who we believe was their offspring... they hang around the winter months through to spring and then disappear for a few months until autumn again....

Pied wagtails are native in the UK apart from the Scotland where they only visit there during the summer, maybe our fave character disappears up there during those summer months to enjoy the scenery, who knows but it's great to hear that familiar call from them before the "Sgt Major" appears and struts around the garden.

They gather together in large roosts, sometimes in towns, often assembling on roofs beforehand, if you saw autumnwatch last year you may have seen a large flock in Sheffield being shown roosting in a tree..

Can we be sure it's the same bird? Well the markings on him are certainly the same from the previous two years, he likes to hang out in a particular area of the garden but also likes to claim the whole territory as he own, and usually we have no more then around 4 pied wagtails in at one time in the garden but one character is here most of the time, with the same markings, so we are reasonably sure it's the same bird.... which is kinda special for us to see :)
