3 Types of Age Spots:
Age Spot/ a.k.a Liver Spot/Solar Lentigines/ Snile Lentigo
-More common in adults over 50
-Younger people can get them if they spend a lot of time in the sun
-Common areas:
-Face
-Arms
-Shoulders
-Hands
-Upper Back
-Areas most exposed to the sun
-More common with lighter skiin types
Appearance of the this type of Age Spot:
-flat, oval
-color: tan, black, or brown
-size: small freckle size to about 1/2 inch across and can start to group together
Causes and the best type of hyperpigmentation treatment on face is discussed.
Macule- flat usually a darker area measuring less than 1 centimeter wide and anyone at any age can have these. These are flat but not indented.
Seborrheic Keratosis/ Senile wart- unlike macules these are raised pigmented lesions. These are also raised pigmented lesions also known as the "barnacles of aging".
This type of "age spot" increases with age 50 plus
-benign
-caused by keratinocytes
-cells that create keratin
-can run in families
Appearance of these type of age spots:

The final one that can be mistaken for an age spot on the face, arms, scalp, legs, etc is Actinic Keratosis (Solar Keratosis)-these are benign but can be "precancerous" and should be evaluate by a doctor.

Appearance of this type is mistaken for an age spot .
For men, it is more common to find this on the ears although they can develop it anywhere it gets sun exposure such as:
