“Nathalie” is a song written
“Nathalie” is a song written by the French singer and songwriter Gilbert Bécaud, and was first recorded by Bécaud himself in 1964. The French lyrics were written by Pierre Delanoë. This Tapani Perttu’s 1969 Finnish version was a great success in Finland. The Finnish lyrics were penned by Saukki.
Both the French and Finnish lyrics describe sitting at “Pushkin’s Café”, which in reality didn’t exist in Moscow in the 1960s. In 1999, however, a restaurant of that name was opened in Moscow, inspired by the song. In 1983, Gilbert Bécaud and Pierre Delanoë continued Nathalie’s story by writing the song “La Fille de Nathalie”. Tapani Perttu recorded it in Finnish in 1985. The Finnish lyrics to this song called “Nathalien tytär” (Nathalie’s Daughter) were also written by Saukki.

TAPANI PERTTU, born in 1940, was a Finnish actor and singer. Perttu worked at the Tampere Theatre between 1963 and 1987, and at the Finnish National Theatre from 1988 to 2005. His first major role was in the 1963 musical “West Side Story”, playing the role of Tony. In the early 1980s, he played the role of Salieri in the play called “Amadeus”, which was a fictional story about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his inner circle.
Perttu also starred in films and television series, and did voice acting work. His breakthrough as a singer came in 1964 when he recorded the song “Nathalie”. He performed several songs of Leonard Cohen and Vladimir Vysotski. Perttu recorded about 70 songs. He died of Parkinson’s disease on July, 2018.
SAUVO PUHTILA (1928–2014) is one of the most eminent post-war lyricists today, both in terms of original lyrics and adaptations. His life’s work as a lyricist has been singularly complex and broad-ranging. Although he has produced a huge number of original lyrics, Puhtila is even better known and more esteemed for his adaptations, which his knowledge of languages has allowed him to produce from the originals written in various languages. He has adapted lyrics for operas, operettas, musicals, choir songs, solos, various hits, pop and rock songs and ditties, as well as gospel, Christmas, children’s and folk songs.
Puhtila’s extensive production of original lyrics includes, for example, hits, ditties, songs for various representatives of Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest and songs for musicals, films, choirs, children and church services.
His career extends from the 1950s to the 80s, and we can safely assume that Puhtila is the most productive lyricist in Finland, with the largest body of work and the broadest spectrum of genres. More than 2,500 of his lyrics have been released on disc, while the number of his individual lyrics is roughly double that. [He himself reported that he had written the lyrics to over 6,000 songs.]
Sauvo Puhtila has always been – and continues to be today – highly regarded and respected among both experts and colleagues due to his superior technique and rich expression, as well as his unique style, which permeates his work throughout.
