In Germany there are now more than 100,000 treatments a year in fertility clinics and yet the topic remains shameful for many couples.
There are many reasons for visiting a fertility clinic. If women only want to have children at a later point in time, you can have their egg cells frozen here - the so-called social freezing. Women who have had a miscarriage also often opt for artificial insemination. The likelihood of a miscarriage is reduced this way. The most common artificial insemination procedure is called ICSI. A single sperm cell is inserted directly into an egg cell using a very fine needle.
For queer couples or for people who decide to co-parente, this is a good way to have children.
Dita Mühlberger is a biologist and head of the laboratory at the fertility center at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. For her, working in the laboratory is part of her everyday life, she already sees embryos there that will later become the children of the couple. Anja Mutz is a gynecologist in the same fertility center and accompanies many couples on their psychologically often very stressful path.
