Albinism is a genetic disorder characterized by little or no production of melanin, the pigment that is responsible for the color of the skin, hair, and eyes. People with albinism typically have lighter skin, hair, and eye color than their non-affected siblings and parents. Depending on the type and severity, they may also experience vision problems and are generally more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancers.

Albinism can occur in humans, animals, and even plants. In humans, the condition is inherited in a recessive manner, meaning both parents must carry a copy of the faulty gene for a child to be affected.

The lack of melanin can lead to a range of issues, particularly related to the eyes. These can include nystagmus (involuntary eye movement), strabismus (crossed eyes), and extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia).
