It is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on teeth. You can remove plaque by brushing twice a day and flossing between your teeth daily. If plaque is not removed everyday, it can cause your gums to pull away from your teeth, forming pockets where more bacteria can collect. Plaque that is not removed hardens into calculus (tartar) along and under your gums. The pockets and hard calculus make it difficult to remove plaque without help from a dentist, and periodontal disease can develop. Periodontal disease can damage the tissues that support your teeth, even the bone. In its more serious form, called "periodontitis," the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out. Brian Y.
