During World War I, York was drafted into the U.S. Army and assigned to the 82nd Division. In 1918, he single-handedly captured 132 German soldiers and helped to destroy 35 machine guns, despite being heavily outnumbered. His courageous actions earned him the Medal of Honor, and he became a national hero. He passed away in 1964, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most celebrated American heroes of World War I.
