This year South Africa commemorates
This year South Africa commemorates the 40th anniversary of the student's uprising of June 16, 1976.
The Soweto Uprising was a student led protest which claimed the lives of 176 people, at least 23 deaths occured on the first day with thousands reported injuries. The police ordered township hospitals to report anyone receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, but doctors listed the wounds as abcesses.
The protests began in Soweto schools and spread across the country. The unrest was a response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction.
