Leaders of the Islamic world have converged for a summit meeting designed to build unity among often-divided Muslims and enhance Islam's image.

Among the main topics for discussion,  the civil war in Bosnia and the Russian invasion of the mainly Muslim Chechnya. .

The two-day summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference is being hosted by King Hassan of Morocco in the capital Casablanca.

The dignitaries were greeted at Mohammed the Fifth airport by the King and his Foreign Minster Abdul Latis Sali.

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and King Hussein of Jordan are among the parade of Islamic leaders descending on this Atlantic coast city.

But before the ceremony and smiles of the main players, divisions have already become apparent.

At  a meeting that preceded the summit foreign ministers prolonged their session to grapple with disputes between Iraq and Kuwait and Jordan and the Palestinians.

In their third day of talks Monday, ministers attempted to smooth out hitches in a more than 50-point agenda to be endorsed by summit leaders.

But the shadow of the Gulf War hangs over the conference as Iraq and Kuwait kept up the confrontation that began with Baghdad's August 1990 invasion of the emirate.
