The key points covered in this video include:

1. DNA Sequencing
2. The Human Genome Project

DNA Sequencing

After the structure of DNA was discovered, the next step for scientists was to develop a method of sequencing the DNA. DNA sequencing is the process used to determine the precise sequence of nucleotides in a length of DNA. The pioneer behind DNA sequencing was Fred Sanger who developed the Sanger sequencing method. Sanger sequencing involved synthesising many DNA fragments that differ in length by one base pair from a DNA template strand. These fragments are then separated out according to length using gel electrophoresis and the end base is identified. This allows the base sequence of the DNA strand to be worked out.

The Human Genome Project

DNA sequencing enabled the launch of a new project to sequence the entire human genome - the Human Genome Project. The Human Genome Project had many aims including: The determination of the entire base sequence of genomes from simpler eukaryotic organisms. The determination of the entire base sequence of the more complex human genome. The identification of new genes and determination of their location, function and regulation. The discussion of ethical, legal and social issues that genome sequencing creates.

Summary
DNA Sequencing is the process used to determine the precise sequence of nucleotides in a length of DNA
DNA sequencing enabled the launch and completion of the Human Genome Project
The aim of the Human Genome Project was to sequence the entire human genome, allowing scientists to identify the number, length and location of genes
Scientists have also started to work out the function of these genes and how they are regulated
Most of the human genome does not code for proteins and the function of this non-coding DNA remains unknown.
