SnapRevise is the UK’s leading A-level and GCSE revision & exam preparation resource offering comprehensive video courses created by A* Oxbridge tutors. Our courses are designed around the OCR, AQA, SNAB, Edexcel B, WJEC, CIE and IAL exam boards, concisely covering all the important concepts required by each specification. In addition to all the content videos, our courses include hundreds of exam question videos, where we show you how to tackle questions and walk you through step by step how to score full marks.

Sign up today and together, let’s make A-level Biology a walk in the park!

The key points covered of this video include:

1. Mutations
2. Inheritance of Mutations
3. Causes of Mutations

Mutations

During the lifetime of an organism, cells will spontaneously acquire mutations in their DNA. Mutations are changes to the genetic material of a cell. Mutations can be small-scale (gene mutations) or large-scale chromosome mutations). Gene mutations are changes to the base sequence or quantity of DNA within a gene or section of DNA. Genete mutations occur spontaneously during the process of DNA replication. Chromosome mutations are changes to the structure or number of whole chromosomes. Chromosome mutations usually occur during the process of meiosis.

Inheritance of Mutations

If a mutation occurs during the formation of gametes, then it may be inherited by offspring. This is important for evolution as it increases genetic variation within a species. If a mutation occurs during mitotic division of somatic cells, then it will not be inherited by offspring. Mutations that occur in somatic cells can often result in cancers.

Causes of Mutation

Mutations mainly occur spontaneously during the process of DNA replication. Although random, the rate of mutation is roughly around a one in a hundred million bases. This rate is increased by mutagens. A mutagen is a chemical, physical or biological agent that causes mutations. Many mutagens cause mutations in DNA that lead to the cell becoming cancerous - these mutagens are called carcinogens.

Summary

Mutations are changes to the genetic material of a cell
Gene mutations are changes to the base sequence or the quantity of DNA within a gene or section of DNA
Chromosome mutations are changes to the structure or number of whole chromosomes
If a mutation occurs during the formation of gametes thenn the mutation may be inherited by offspring
If a mutation occurs during the formation of somatic cells then this may lead to cancer
Mutations occur spontaneously but can also be caused by substances called mutagens
Mutagens that lead to a cell becoming cancerous are carcinogens
