How I teach my birds what to eat.

1. Mixing new food into their current food
 a. Start with a tiny amount of new food to get them used to something new
 b. Remember that Greys are naturally scared of new things
 c. Add something tasty they already like. Sliced fruit or nuts is something my birds like.
 d. If adding cooked/raw/wet food to your bird's regular food, watch out for mold or spoilage. Remove and wash bowl daily.

2. Using a Food Call
 a. A Food Call is a word or sound that signifies FOOD
 b. Not your bird's name or the name of the food
 c. Same as mama hen calling her babies or people calling their pigs
 d. When first teaching a food call, use the bird's current food and call/reinforce multiple times.
 e. After the birds understand the food call, introduce a small amount of new food using the first method of mixing new/current food
 f. Use the Food Call everytime you feed your birds for reinforcement

3. Eating in front of the birds (pretending can work, too)
 a. Birds learn by watching each other and eating in front of them demonstrates that the food you are offering is safe
 b. Time consuming if you have multiple birds

CAUTION: The Cold Turkey method is too risky and not advised!!! Birds will starve even if there is food available when they don't understand that it is edible. Unless they understand that it's safe to eat, they will NOT eat it.

I never force my birds to eat anything. By limiting sugars (fruits) and fats (nuts) I can get my birds to eat a large variety of food.

Please share in the comments any tips you have for introducing new food to your birds.

By the way, I have melasma. No makeup in this video, it’s not a black eye just my natural skin.
