In this painting of the Annunciation, the Early Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck invests his iconography with visual richness and spiritual meaning. One of the central iconographic elements of van Eyck’s painting is the depiction of Mary reading from a large open book, which is likely meant to be the Jewish scriptures. In the moment that we see in this depiction of Annunciation, Mary’s faith in God is being fulfilled.
Rather than accurately illustrated the Bible, he visualizes the Annunciation as a moment in which Mary’s piety is rewarded with blessing. This work of devotional art, which was originally part of a larger altarpiece, unites iconography and purpose in order to make God’s blessing also manifest to the viewer.
