. The word poliomyelitis originates from the Greek word; polio, meaning grey and myelon, meaning marrow. It is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus, a member of the genus Entero-virus, belonging to the Picornaviridae family.
In this video, Dr. Tammy Wang discusses the symptoms, transmission, and vaccination of poliomyelitis.
More than 70% of infections in children are asymptomatic. A reminder has a non-specific viral prodrome.
After the resolution of this minor illness, rapid onset of asymmetric, acute, flaccid paralysis occurs.
The post-polio syndrome occurs 15-40 years later in 25-40% of survivors. Its characteristics are slow and irreversible exacerbation of weakness.
Polio is a highly infectious illness that spreads through contact between people, by nasal and oral secretions, and by contact with contaminated feces.
Poliovirus enters the body through the mouth and multiplies in the pharynx and gastrointestinal tract.
For the onset of paralysis in paralytic-poliomyelitis, the incubation period usually is 7 to 21 days.
There were three poliovirus strains. With widespread global vaccination, only 1 type of poliovirus strains remain.
There are two types of vaccines available globally for poliomyelitis. Only an inactivated polio vaccine is available in the US.
