The Serratus Anterior muscle is one that is highly overlooked. It plays a major role in helping your scapula sit nicely on your back and in assisting the shoulder movement in various positions. Issues with the serratus can result in winging scapula, weakness and pain. Here are some great exercises to target the ever important Serratus Anterior Muscle:

Scap Push Ups – In an elevated position, bring your shoulders down away from your ears and let the spine extend a bit. Then push the blades away from the spine. That will activate (and strengthen) the serratus and protract the blade. Some talented puppies are good at this one too!
Penguins – Clasp your hands behind your head and gently drive your elbows forward to engage serratus. Retract chin to maintain head over shoulders.
Band Presses – Stand in an aligned position and anchor a band behind you at about shoulder height. With a straight arm, press the band forward to protract the shoulder.

Now you’ve got three simple movements to get your serratus firing to improve your posture, push exercises and overall health of your shoulder!
