What happens when someone is
What happens when someone is wanting to leave a spiritual or religious cult when one no longer feels a connection or resonance to a cult's practices and ideologies.
We're not here to criticize or shame people who have chosen to be part of cults or cults themselves, but rather to dissect and understand why someone may need or want to be part of a cult. Now, when we look at cults, it means having a devotion to a particular figure, things, or ideology.
Even though a cult leader has something or someone that's above them, what generally happens is that they end up being idolized by their devotees, and more often than not, they want that. If you grew up in a family where your parents or other family members are part of a cult, it's almost as if you don't have a choice but to be a part of it too. We as children aren't really given options. Some are even led to believe that it's evil to not partake, and that we can go to hell for our refusal.
More often than not, being part of a cult may mean adhering to very strict or rigid ways of being. If one doesn't follow what the rest are doing, one is ostracized, isolated, or even demonized. We crave the archetype of embodied Godhead. We love seeing others wield that power and we also want that power but are sometimes scared so we give ours away, hoping that person we are personifying as God will be trusted.
So, then how do we leave? How do we break free of a cult? Well, you have to ask yourself...
Can I find meaning outside of the cult?
Can I find my own sense of self-worth?
Will I be able to belong and find a healthier "in-group," one that won't cast me out for having my own freedom of expression, one that will accept me for me, instead of instilling fear in me for having different values?
Being with people that you trust, respect, and revere, and in turn see you, acknowledge you, and hear you will help you break free from a life of rigidity and control. The choice is ultimately yours.
