Tesla Cybertruck Cross Country Road Trip 2,500 Miles!!

After picking up this Cybertruck
After picking up this Cybertruck in Salt Lake City, towing my Cybertruck behind it and delivering it to Celebration Florida for a Make A Wish event, it’s now time to deliver this truck to its final destination. When I agreed to pick this truck up in Utah and deliver to Florida, I also agreed to deliver the truck from Florida to California after the charity event.
Starting in Daytona, and stopping in Orlando, I then proceeded to cross the country in this Tesla Cybertruck, which involved crossing the southern half of the country on I-10. This roughly 2,500 mile road trip cross country is a great experience to see how the Cybertruck does for long road trips.
So the question is this, is the Cybertruck a great road-tripper or not? By the end of this video, you will surely know as well as myself.
This trip ended up taking 3 days to complete, which included staying in the Phoenix area for 12 hours to see a friend. After that overnight stay, I completed the trip by arriving in Long Beach, CA in the greater Los Angeles area.
The event in California was EVFest hosted by the Tesla Owners Club of SoCal. This event was jam packed with tons of custom and unique EV’s of many brands. Although Tesla was the dominant represented brand, it was amazing to see so many other EV’s and a whole lineup of custom wrapped Cybertrucks on display!
For the 2,500 miles, the Cybertruck was nearly flawless. The trip did start out questionable with a supercharger in Ocala, Florida. This supercharger would not go over 35 kW charge rate. After moving stalls, changing charging procedure, and finally confirming with other Tesla’s charging, the station seemed to be having issues. Fortunately that was not an issue anywhere else along the route.
Finally, along the way, I took the opportunity to find out what the charging curve looks like on an 800v charger. Electrify America had 2 chargers on my route that I decided to use to record the charging curve. The Cybertruck has 1,000v architecture, but this will at least allow us to see what the current charging capabilities are on higher voltage (roughly double) than the current Tesla network supports.
I was pleased with the results, and with this documented, we can now track the charging curve on the Cybertruck as we get software enhancements over time. In the end, this trip required about 1,500 kWh of energy in charging (including losses from heat), and cost $502.87 to travel the 2,504 miles of this trip. That comes out to just at $0.20/mile.
This comes out just under, or in the same ballpark of the average 20 mph truck across the country at $4.25/gal average. That does not include the oil change that is likely due immediately following the trip. With the 2 EA chargers, the cost of this trip was higher as these 2 chargers were 45% higher cost per kWh than the Tesla Superchargers on average.
So to wrap things up, is the Cybertruck a good road-tripper? It is absolutely a great road-tripper! It is smooth, comfortable, charges fast and has no issues getting into tight spaces. On the flip side, the lack of autopilot does make the Cybertruck less enjoyable on road trips than other Tesla’s, at least for now.
