12 RULES FOR LIFE, JORDAN PETERSON SUMMARY - LAW 1: STAND UP STRAIGHT WITH YOUR SHOULDERS BACK

Jordan Peterson has been in the news a lot lately, and has really blown up and changed the way many people see the world. For better or for worse. Personally, I find he has said some great things and is a great beacon of light for the generation that is coming into adulthood.

I've learned a lot from him and hope to learn a lot more from him in the future. Pick up his book 12 Rules for Life on Amazon or at a bookstore.

It's a great introduction into self help from Jordan Petersons unique world.

The first rule in Jordan Petersons book 12 Rules For Life is to Stand up Straight with your shoulders back.

Seems like a silly rule to start a book off with, no? Why would he recommend this?

Because Hierarchy is built into evolution, and good posture signifies high status.

It goes back millions of years in evolution, and if we look at lobsters, who have a lot in common  with us, we will see why.

When lobsters get mature they lose their shell and get soft until they develop a new, thicker shell. In this time of need they need shelter, and a cave rock that can have a shell dragged over the entrance to disguise it is a highly in demand asset.

Often lobsters will fight for this place. The winner will go on to strut around with big posture, and have his in demand household. Girl lobsters will want to mate with him to get his good genetics.

The loser will adopt a shelled up posture. Having been defeated, it remains defeated forever and will adopt a subordinates brain. It won’t even fight lobsters that it’s already defeated.

Winning and losing are both cycles. If you win, you will continue to win. If you lose, you’ll continue to lose. As evidenced by this bible quote: “To those who have everything, more will be given. From those who have nothing, everything will be taken.”

If you are winning in life, you’ll have better posture, your brain will produce more serotonin and dopamine, which will allow you to think further into the future as you’ll have reason to believe the future will be bright. Whereas if you’re in a losing cycle, you have a shorter outlook and are more likely to partake in drugs and alcohol as an escape.

Standing up straight is step one of a winning cycle. Your body will produce more dopamine and seratonin. If you have proper posture, it is a symbolic way of saying you are voluntarily facing the world and its hardships.

When people encounter you, they won’t automatically take you for a low status person. You then have more opportunities to meet potential mates. You are less likely to be challenged as you appear you’ll fight back.

With proper posture, people will start to assume you are confident and able.

You will begin to speak your mind, put your desires forward. So walk tall and gaze straightforwardly ahead, and soon you will become a beacon of strength that stands up for yourself, and has the ability to face the world and stand up for others as well.

But it all starts with yourself, and it starts with managing your posture. So stand straight with your shoulders back.
