Do your scientific papers lack narrative flow? Do reviewers tell you that your writing is choppy, doesn’t flow well or, worse, is incoherent? Are you stumped about how to address this problem? In writing a scientific paper, it’s necessary to craft a narrative that guides your readers and helps them follow your thought processes. In a previous video, I described how scientific papers follow a story arc: Introduction (what I studied and why), Methods (how I did it), Results (what I found), and Discussion (what it means). In this video, I show how to improve narrative flow by ensuring each paper section, subsection, and paragraph follows a story arc to make a clear point and that all narrative units are written to form a coherent whole. 00:00 The story arc 01:02 Story arcs in an example paper 02:46 Use subheadings to highlight narrative flow 03:45 Example of poor narrative flow and revision using the story arc 05:53 Use sentence structure and transitions to improve flow 06:59 Questions to aid writing the narrative You might also be interested in these videos: How to Use Narrative Structure in a Scientific Paper:    • How to Use Narrative Structure in a S...   How to Write Clearly: Cohesion and Coherence:    • How to Write Clearly: Cohesion & Cohe...   Writing is Thinking:    • Writing Is Thinking   If you use video in your research or would like to make a video about your research, check out my other YouTube channel, The Scientist Videographer: youtube.com/user/sciencevideography Follow me on Twitter: @SciWri_KLMcKee
