A throw-in is awarded to the opponents of the player who last touched the ball when the entire ball passes over the sideline, whether on the ground or in the air.

In order to take a throw in, there are a few rules to consider:
Rule #1 for Throw In Rules for Football - You must stand facing the field of play at the spot the ball went out-of-bounds.

Opponents must stand at least 2 yards away from where the throw-in is to be taken. If a player, intentionally throws the ball at an opponent in order to play the ball again but not recklessly or with excessive force, the referee may allow play to continue. If done maliciously, the referee can award a free kick to the other team and potentially a yellow card to the person who took the throw-in.

Rule #2 for Soccer Throw in Rules - Have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline, but not past the touchline.

Keep in mind that the thrower must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player because it will be an indirect free kick for the other team if they do.

Rule #3 for Throw In Soccer Rules - Throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head.

The ball is in play when it enters the field of play. If the ball touches the ground before entering, the throw-in is retaken by the same team from the same position. If the throw-in is not taken correctly it is retaken by the opposing team.

A goal cannot be scored directly from a throw-in. If the ball enters the opponents’ goal without touching anyone else from either team, a goal kick is awarded. If the ball enters the thrower’s goal without touching anyone, a corner kick is awarded.

Pro-Tips for How to Throw In Soccer Ball
Pro-Tip #1 for Soccer Rules for Throw Ins - Have your team’s outside midfielders, wingbacks, and fullbacks be the designated throw in takers so that they will not be far out of position when they leave the field of play and to let the players who are better with the ball at their feet (normally the attacking midfielder and forwards) try to get open to receive the ball. Also, because their positioning is along a sideline, they can quickly grab the ball when it goes out for a quick throw-in to catch the other team not paying attention.

Pro-Tip #2 – Since the ball does not need to go up the field when doing a thrown in, don’t be afraid to throw the ball to open defenders on your team to ensure your team maintains possession.

Pro-Tip #3 - Exercises in the gym like the pullover will help you improve strength to take a long throw-in, but in all honestly, you should not be lifting weights only to improve how far you can throw the ball. There are more important aspects of soccer than the throw-in. So, if you are going to lift weights, focus on the squat and deadlift especially.

Avoid raising one or both feet when doing a throw-in because this will give possession of the throw-in to the other team.

Also, avoid throwing the ball over a shoulder. It will result in an illegal throw-in and possession for the other team. The ball must go over your head using both hands.
