Canal lining is the process of reducing seepage loss of irrigation water by adding an impermeable layer to the edges of the trench. Seepage can result in losses of 30 to 50 percent of irrigation water from canals, so adding lining can make irrigation systems more efficient.

Advantages of Canal Lining

It reduces the loss of water due to seepage, enhancing the duty. It controls the water logging and hence the harmful effects of water logging are eliminated. It provides a smooth surface and thus the velocity of flow can be increased.

Design Steps:
(i). Velocity of flow (V)
(ii). Discharge of the channel (Q).
(iii). Rugosity coefficient (N).
(iv). Hyraullic Radius (R).
(v). Dimensions of the canal (width, depth)
(vi). Longitudinal slope (S).
(vii). Slope of banks
