Molecular Structure and Lewis Structure for 2-Propanol (Isopropyl alcohol)

To write the structure for the organic molecule 2-Propanol (also called Isopropanol or
Rubbing alcohol) we’ll start by writing Propane.  Propane is an alkane with three carbon atoms connected with single bonds.  Next, we’ll number the Carbon atoms one through three.  

Since we have 2- Propanol we’ll put an OH on Carbon atom number two.  The OH replaces one of the H atoms on the second C atom in Propane.  This gives us the correct structure for 2 Propanol.

We can also write the structure using straight lines without the element symbols, which is a sort of molecular structure shorthand  This is the skeletal formula for 2 Propanol.  Finally, we could represent the structure with molecular models to provide further information about the molecular geometry.
