Virginia City is a small town located in Storey County of north western Nevada, in between Reno and the state capital Carson City. It is part of the Reno-Sparks Metropolitan area.
Like many other cities and towns in California and Nevada in the mid-1800's, Virginia City was a mining town, where miners migrated westerward to seek riches in mining silver and gold. Founded in 1859, Virginia City's population grew overnight with the discovery of the Comstock Lode, named after Henry T. P. Comstock which is a lode of silver ore under the eastern slope of Mount Davidson.
Today, the town's economy is now based on tourism with many residents who live there own and work at the shops. The city is currently a National Historic Landmark District, drawing more than 2 million visitors per year.
