How to Convert Mixed Numbers into Fractions

Step 1: Multiply by the Denominator --------------------------------------------------------------------- The first step to converting a mixed number to a fraction is to multiply the denominator of the fraction by the whole number. Using the mixed number 3 5/8 (pronounced as three and five eighths), the denominator is 8 and the whole number is 3. Multiply the denominator 8 by the whole number 3. c   * 8 X 3 = 24 Step 2: Add the Numerator --------------------------------------------------------------------- Once the denominator and the whole number have been multiplied, the next step is to add the number from the numerator of the fraction. In the mixed number shown in step 1 (3 5/8), 5 is the numerator for the fraction 5/8. This number is added to the number found by multiplying the denominator and the whole number in the first step. c  * 24 + 5 = 29 Step 3: Write the Improper Fraction Answer --------------------------------------------------------------------- Once the first two steps have been completed, the number you calculated becomes the numerator for the answer. When converting a mixed number, the denominator stays the same.c  Using the example from the previous steps, the numerator for the answer is 29 and the denominator is 8 making the correct improper fraction 29/8.   * 3 5/8 = 29/8 Step 4: Practice Converting Mixed Numbers to Fractions --------------------------------------------------------------------- Use what you have learned to practice converting mixed numbers to fractions. Remember to use this method: 1. Multiply the denominator times the whole number. 2. Add the numerator. 3. Place the answer over the denominator. Try these problems. Convert the mixed number to a fraction. A.  3 1/6 B. 4 2/5 C. 1 4/6 D. 3 5/7 Answers are found at the bottom of the page.
