-- Tuyul dan Mbak Yul (The Goblin and Miss Yul) – ENGLISH SUBTITLES Episode 1 -- For several years now I’ve been watching on-and-off the popular Indonesian sitcom Tuyul dan Mbak Yul. Although it’s become one of my favourite shows of late as a result of its truly surreal plot, premise, and special effects, I’ve not been able to find any version of the show in English to show my friends. So now, I debut a version of this masterpiece for a wider audience. I hope I can aid in bringing this magnificent acid trip of a TV show to an English-speaking audience. If you’re a fan of Lynch, Jodorowsky, or Anno, get ready to have your socks blown off by the most post-postmodern piece of television I believe to be in existence. You’re welcome. A little context: Goblins, or Tuyuls, are creatures in Javanese mythology that wreak havoc and steal on behalf of humans who invoke them to do their bidding. They are said to be commanded by a goblin king who lives in the mountains. Tuyul dan Mbak Yul was initially created by Multivision Plus, and ran for a total of 260 episodes across 3 seasons in Indonesia. It is an incredibly popular sitcom within Indonesia, although it has never gained much traction outside the country. This episode first aired in 1999. Episode Synopsis: The protagonist, Ucil, is a good goblin who has decided to no longer steal from humans. Because of this, he is being hunted by two mercenaries sent by the goblin king. Along the way, he meets Yulia, with whom he stays and makes friends. DISCLAIMER: This has been translated solely by a non-native speaker of Indonesian. Although I have studied the language for a number of years and tried the best I could, some mistakes may have occurred. I was forced to transcribe the dialogue entirely by ear and then translate into English, because I couldn’t find a script for the show anywhere. Also some of the scenes have pretty atrocious audio quality, which doesn’t help. All copyright belongs to Multivision Plus.
