The best time to shear Christmas trees is in the summer right after the new growth has come in and it is not woody yet.   Sometimes you don't get that done right in the summer.   After sales this year the poorly shaped trees were left behind.  We take a stihl hedgetimmer on a pole and reshape the poorly shaped trees.   We need to use the power tool to efficiently get through branches that are now woody.   This winter shaping allows the trees to heal up with next years new growth.  The energy will be sent out to the existing buds and the tree will fill and and grow out in a better shape.   Then the following  summer you can now effectively swing a shearing knife or blade to get this finished shape.   This added step allows you to get a saleable tree a year or two earlier.  It is obviously best to not let the trees get to this point but it does happen at times.
