১৯৪৭ সালের ১৫ অগাস্ট ভারত স্বাধীন হওয়ার পর থেকে প্রায় ২০০ টি রাজনৈতিক দল এদেশে গড়ে উঠেছে। অন্যান্য সব গণতান্ত্রিক দেশের সাথে তুলনা করলে ভারতে রাজনৈতিক দলের সংখ্যা অনেক বেশি। এই দেশের সবচেয়ে বড় দুটি দল হলো কংগ্রেস ও বিজেপি,কিন্তু এই দুটি দল ছাড়াও কিছু শক্তিশালী আঞ্চলিক দল ও ভারতের গণতন্ত্রে বিশেষ ভূমিকা রাখে . এই প্রত্যেকটি রাজনৈতিক দলেরই একজন প্রধান মুখ থাকেন যাকে আমরা দলের সুপ্রিমো বা লিডার বলে থাকি . তবে বিগত এক যুগ ধরে রাজনীতি করার ধরন বদলেছে সাথে বদলেছে রাজনৈতিক নেতাদের ক্ষমতা এবং জনপ্রিয়তা বাড়ানোর লক্ষ্য . বর্তমানে ভারতবর্ষের বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক দলের এমন কিছু রাজনীতি বিদ আছেন যাদের জনপ্রিয়তা এবং ক্ষমতা প্রচুর.
