The Suebi were a Germanic confederation of tribes. Caesar mentions the Suebi extensively, in his book "The Gaulish Wars." During the Ancient Times, the Suebi had interesting traditions, and were a pure pagan people. According to Caesar, they rejected the concept of private property, as well as the use of money. They thought money would bring decadance to their life style, and would divide them. They also disliked wine, for the same reasons. They were, as the remaining germanic tribes, a nation of warriors, and lived among nature, the forests, from which the Germanic peoples said they came. The Suebi also had very positive views regarding the virginity of male warriors. To the Suebi, it was shameful for a man "to meet a woman", writes Caesar, meaning, to lose his virginity, before he was 20 years old. They believed that, by keeping their virginity, they would also keep their "vital strenght", which would make them stronger and even taller. Hence, the barrier of 20 years old. Later on, already within the first decades of the Middle Ages, in the 4th century, the Suebi were, by this time, a smaller Germanic nation, in contrast with the more powerful Goths, Franks, or Saxons. Still, in the 5th century, the Suebi managed to stablish one of the first Barbarian European Kingdoms of Western Europe, that followed the downfall of the Roman Empire. The Suebi Kingdom was established in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, in what today is Galicia, and Northern Portugal. This Kingdom, however, didn't last long, just a century. The Suebi were conquered by their Germanic cousins, the Visigoths, who already dominated most of what today is Portugal and Spain.  When these events were produced, both Germanic nations, the Suebi and the Goths, had already converted themselves to Christianity, and were in the process of adopting other aspects of Roman culture. Not much was left by the Suebi, regarding pagan culture and objects, due to their Christianization, and assimilation. But still, to this day, in Galicia and Northern Portugal, the name "Suevos" (Suebi) can be found in a certain number of places, marking their legacy, even in present times.
