At the beginning of World War One, the imperial German army faced a challenge in equipping front line soldiers with adequate weapons, including rifles and bayonets. The rifle stockpiles were opened up and old, obsolete Gewehr 1888 rifles were issued to second line troops, allowing modern Gewehr 1898 rifles to be prioritized for front line use. Arsenals geared up to produce as many rifles as possible. Bayonet production had been mostly handled by the arsenals, however they were now running at full capacity. Germany turned to small workshops to produce new bayonet designs that were simple and robust. This one in particular has unique features allowing it to fit on both Gewehr 88 and Gewehr 98 rifles.
