The classical way to teach DSP filter theory is based on the direct forms and the bilinear transform, which is often poorly suitable for music DSP applications. “The Art of VA Filter Design” book proposes a different way of teaching the filter theory with a specific goal of usage in the music DSP context.
The approach is based around a visual schematic representation of differential equations. The focus is thereby on continuous-time prototypes, the time-discretization by trapezoidal integration being implicitly understood as a routine operation. The techniques arising out of this approach are currently becoming the industry standard.
