Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Aug 2 launched massive military exercises off the coast of Abu Musa island one of three Gulf islands under Iranian control but disputed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The exercises were conducted amid rising tensions between Iran and the US over America’s increasing military presence in the Gulf. During the unannounced drills, the IRGC navy unveiled new vessels equipped with 600-km range missiles. Is this Tehran’s message to Washington to leave the Gulf? Is the Islamic Republic trying to kill two birds – US and UAE - with one stone – military exercises in disputed Gulf islands?
