Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts that often lead to a cycle of fear, leading to increased stress hormones, which reinforces the anxious or fearful response to these thoughts.

The reason why the brain has these unwanted thoughts is because the brain thinks it's important. By zooming out and tagging intrusive thoughts with a marker of importance rather than fear, we can start to soften their impact.

Techniques like CPR for the amygdala are valuable for calming the nervous system and neutralizing the fear response. Using nervous system-regulating tools can down-regulate stress responses and create more space to change the narrative or meaning around intrusive thoughts.
