Pressure support ventilation (PSV) is a mode of positive pressure mechanical ventilation where the patient initiates every breath. This mode can be administered invasively through an endotracheal tube or non-invasively through a mask. PSV is a comfortable option for patients and is often used for weaning from invasive ventilation or providing supportive care with non-invasive ventilation. Flow is controlled by a set driving pressure, with tidal volume dependent on flow and inspiratory duration. PSV settings include driving pressure, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), and fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2), with minute ventilation reliant on respiratory rate and tidal volume. No mandatory breaths are given, ensuring no minimum minute ventilation is guaranteed.
