Painting varied edges and achieving
Painting varied edges and achieving balance helps take your watercolours to the next level. Hard and soft, lost and found (even throw in a bit of broken) and you will capture interest and variety with your paint brush, to intrigue (and delight) your viewers. Well that's the theory!
In this short film, I'll explain what edges are, show you some examples and give you tips on how to achieve them. A hard edge is pretty obvious (wet paint on dry paper), but how can you control soft edges? Can you soften an edge once the paint is dry? I will share one of my 'aha' moments when I realised that the direction in which you soften an edge makes such a difference.
Too many soft edges and your work may end up as an indistinct blur and too many hard edges, it may look childish and cut out. If you lose lots of edges, you may confuse the viewer, but if you find them all your painting may be shouty. We will try for a balance and mix. However, right at the end I will show you some wonderful hard edged work from Benjamin Pearce, which is the exception which proves the rule....
