When Elizabeth I died without an heir in 1603, the English throne passed to James VI of Scotland, who reigned in England as James I. As monarch, James attempted to introduce absolute monarchy to England, but encountered a great deal of resistance from Parliament and dissident Calvinist Protestants. James enforced religious uniformity, demanding that all of his subjects be in good standing with the Anglican Church. Both the Puritans, who sought to "purity" the Church of England, and the Separatists, who sought to separate from the Church of England, found themselves frustrated with these religious policies. While some of these dissident Protestants left England during James' reign to start colonies in North America, many remained and resisted James' policies and would continue their resistance into the reign of his son, Charles I.
