Blind Willie Johnson wrote and first recorded It's Nobody's Fault But Mine for the Columbia label. The song showcases his bottleneck slide guitar style in open 'D' tuning as he vocalizes alternately with his penknife slide guitar backdrop.

On December 3, 1927, Johnson recorded six songs in Dallas, Texas, for a touring Columbia Records field unit led by Frank Walker, including this gospel-blues, It's Nobody's Fault But Mine and the flip side, Dark Was The Night - Cold Was The Ground. In total, Blind Willie Johnson recorded 30 songs for Columbia.

The original Columbia record was released in 1928. It was reissued in November, 1935, on the black and gold Vocalion label and then in 1936 on the blue Vocalion label, using the same master discs as the original 1928 Columbia release. This record is an example of one of those Vocalion reissues and exhibits the original Columbia numbering in the run-out groove. Ultimately, Vocalion was bought by Columbia in 1938 and became a subsidiary label of the parent company until it was discontinued in 1940.

It's Nobody's Fault But Mine was next released by Sister Rosetta Tharpe in 1942. As with most versions that followed, the title was shortened to Nobody's Fault But Mine. The song's title sometimes appeared as Ain't Nobody's Fault But Mine on reditions by other artists.

After Tharpe's release of the song, it took until the mid-1960s before the song re-surfaced as a rendition by The Staple Singers, after which it was covered by many artists, including; Nina Simone, Lucida Williams' band Buick 6, Doc Watson, Willie Nelson, Tom Jones, and Ry Cooder, among others.

A rendition cover of It's Nobody's Fault But Mine was popularized by the British rock band Led Zeppelin in 1976 on their album release 'Presence', although the release wrongly indicated Page and Plant as the songwriters rather than Johnson. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant recorded an acoustic arrangement of Nobody's Fault but Mine in 1994 to include on their No Quarter release.

Texas-born Blind Willie Johnson was not born blind. Music historians and biographers generally accept an account of Johnson's widow that at age seven, he was blinded when an argument between his father and stepmother escalated and, at some point, Johnson's stepmother splashed Willie with a lye water solution, although no details of known certainty exist to corroborate the story.

Blind Willie Johnson was religious and had aspired to become a Baptist Minister from an early age. He teamed up this influence with his self-taught guitar and vocal delivery to perform mostly gospel blues, becoming a well known evangelist. His song, It's Nobody's Fault But Mine, is a self-condemning portrayal if he were to choose not to read the bible he owned.

Despite all of the accolades, Blind Willie Johnson never did benefit financial reward from his record sales. He last lived in Beaumont, Texas, preaching as Reverend W. J. Johnson at The House Of Prayer which he operated. In the summer of 1945, his Beaumont house was destroyed by fire. With no other option, Johnson remained living at the burned out ruins, falling victim to untreated pneumonia which led to his death on September 18, 1945, at the age of 48.

I recorded this video of my original 1936 Vocalion 78RPM record being played on my turntable to share the experience of playing 78s with those who also enjoy the hobby and history of shellac records, especially that of early influential blues music and original artists. I do not claim or own, nor imply ownership, of the song or music recording in any way.

Lyrics

Nobody's fault but mine,
Nobody's fault but mine.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost.

I have a bible in my home,
I have a bible in my home.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost.

Mmm, father he taught me how to read,
Father he taught me how to read.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost,
nobody's fault but mine.

Ah, Lord,
Nobody's fault but mine
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost.

Ah, I have a bible of my own,
I have a bible of my own.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost.

Oh, mother she taught me how to read,
Mother she taught me how to read.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost.
Nobody's fault but mine.

Ah, Lord, Lord,
Nobody's fault but mine.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost.

And sister she taught me how to read,
Sister she taught me how to read.
If I don't read it,
My soul be lost, .
Nobody's fault but mine.

Ah, mmm,
Lord, Lord,
Nobody's fault but mine
If I don't read it,
My soul'd be lost.
mmm
