Our day started off with a short jaunt to a veterans memorial at City Hall in Monroe. Somewhere along that short ride, my tour pack dropped precipitously low, because the rack had punched through bottom. I didn’t even notice it until the biker behind me told me it was bouncing and hanging off the back!  Several people helped me get the tour pack off the bike and we threw it in the back of a truck, hoping I could it fixed at our next Harley stop for lunch. I called ahead and talked to the owner of Jackson Harley, Earl, and he told me to get it there and he would see what they could do.  Ok, nothing for me to do at that point but hope for the best! I strapped the remaining gear to the back of the bike and off I went!

On Southern Route, we always look forward to our Mississippi stops because of the DRAMA that accompanies our arrival! The day kicked off with an amazing demonstration of riding skills by the Louisiana State Troopers. I could watch all day long! They’ve accompanied us all across the state and then handed us off to the Mississippi State Troopers at the river.  Usually, as we cross the river, Apache gunships rise up over the river banks and fly up and down the entire length of our Pack!! It’s so hard to keep our eyes on the bikes in front of us, where all we really want to do is cheer and watch them buzz our line!  But this year, no Apaches. 😔

At Harley of Jackson, we are treated to an illustrious gathering of notables! There were so many I can’t begin to name them all. So I’ll just mention the ones I got to meet in person:  MoH recipient Michael Thornton, a Navy Seal in Vietnam; Earline Gaither, an original “Rosie the Riveter”; Joe Richard, a Pearl Harbor survivor, and Captain Oster of the naval destroyer, the USS Jack Lucas (christened for another MoH recipient and RFTW rider!).  And last, but certainly not least, my good friend, former POW and RFTW family, Joe “Gump” Hudson!

Meanwhile, my tour pack was being fixed by Homer in the service bay. He reinforced the bottom with a fabricated steel plate, added some support bars underneath (all shown in the video), and got me back on the road in time to join up with my platoon!

Our nightly stop in Meridian MS featured the much-anticipated  laundry service, a colorful sunset, and a peaceful night swinging in my hammock in the horse stalls!
