Sweaty palms, racing heart, twisting stomach, dry mouth…don’t worry. You’re NOT having a heart attack. You’re simply…speaking in public. A task many would rather die than face. However, it’s something we all have to face at some point in our lives, whether it’s a sales pitch or just engaging with an audience. The good news is that it CAN be overcome! But…how?
You first need to examine WHY. The fear of public speaking, otherwise known as glossophobia, comes down to social evaluation. We fear judgment, criticism and rejection. This intense emotion of fear can trigger the “Fight or flight” response, a psychological reaction that mimics the symptoms of a serious threat, like a heart attack.
Research suggests that our bodies take control, determining the danger of every situation through sensory input and processing, as well as memories and past experiences. If danger is “found”, the hypothalamus triggers the pituitary gland to secrete the hormone ACTH – causing an adrenaline overload.

To overcome your fear, remember one word.

A.W.A.R.E.
