Looking back at another 'never-was' concept, we venture to Manchester in the early 1970s, when the newly formed SELNEC PTE proposed solving a pervasive logistical issue of poor connections between the city's two main terminal stations by creating a dedicated underground line that would run north/south beneath the streets, with onward connections to the various regional centres of south Lancashire and Northeast Cheshire, this promising idea unfortunately dashed due to the fiscal uncertainty of a government teetering on bankruptcy, but would help lead to a future revival for rapid transit in Manchester that would appear in the form of an on-street tramway style metro.
