10 Owl Facts

Thanks to live science for these awesome facts.
1. Owls can swim - well the great horned owl can. They swim front crawl. Why? Because if they go after prey in the water and end up getting wet, it is easier for them to swim to shore then try to fly with soaking wet feathers. Then when they get to shore they can flluff out their feathers to dry out.
2. Not all owls are nocturnal - some are diurnal which means they hunt during the day. These include the Gray Owl, Strix nebulosa, the northern hawk owl, Surnia Ulula and teh northern pygmy owl Glaucidium gnoma and it's thought that this is because their prey, songbirds and small mammals are diurnal
3. They have the best necks - they have twice as many as humans 14 which means they can turn their head 270 degrees almost all the way round. This is good because they cannot move their eyes very easily
4. Giant owl -  it was 1.1 metres tall. 3.6 feet  but sad times it is now extinct it was called Ornimegalonyx and it's remains were found in caves in Cuba
5. Fake eyes - some have fake eyes the northern pygmy owl has black feathers on the back of it's head which look like creepy eyes they are thought to slow down or make predators wary. They are less likely to attempt an attack if they know the prey is watching
6. Owls are not waterproof - this helps to understand 1 they don't have the oil in their feathers like other birds and so they need to dry out if they get wet. On the plus side it means their feathers are soft adn silent which helps when hunting.
7. They are great a recycling - they don't make their own nests but use nest left by other birds like the woodpecker or cavities in trees. The burrowing owl Athene cunicularia  lives in holes abandoned by prairie dogs or badgers
8. They have opposable toes -  they have zygodactyl talons , two talons point forwards and two point back the movable toe extends to the side which makes a complete circle of claws
9. Snowy owls can fly great distances  - Bubo scandiacus spend most of their time in the arctic but fly south every so often it's a journey called a irruption they can be as far as 3000 miles to  Hawaii
10. Female owls tend to be larger than the males it's thought that this discourages the male owls from competing with each other for females or it could be they are smaller so they are better able to catch prey to provide for their mates and chicks
