This series we're going to be talking about how to interview for your first job. It's tricky and can be scary...we know. We've all been there. But, getting that first job may not be as hard as you think.
This week we're going to focus on the job interview question, "Tell me about yourself?" if you have no job experience.
This may be one of the first questions you get asked in your interview, so you'll definitely want to be prepared so you don't start on an awkward note. Avoid things like:
Well I've never really worked before. But, I'm pretty awesome so I'm worth the risk.
Let's see...hmmm....I'm a junior at Springfield High School. That's about it.
I have nothing else to do and would like to get some work experience.
In another video, we talked about how you should answer this question by talking about your skills, experience and time. But, if you have no experience, what you want to do is pull from any experience you do have, whether it's volunteer work, school activities, etc., that makes you look professional and like a fast learner.
Keep it short and sweet. Employers don't need to hear your life story; they just need to hear why you'd be a good fit for this job.
I'm currently a student at Springfield High School where I am very active in the school's student council association. As a representative for my class, I've helped organize various fundraising events. This has really helped me become comfortable handling money, which is a reason I think I would make a great fit as a cashier at your store.
We know it's scary to try and land that first job. But, we are here to help. Let us know below what worries you about finding a job with no experience, and we may even make a video about it!
