Chad breaks down catalytic hydrogenation of alkenes (aka catalytic reduction of alkenes) using H2 and a metal catalyst like Pd, Pt, or Ni in this lesson. He explains that while we don't fully understand the mechanism of this reaction we can still explain why it results in the Syn addition of two hydrogen atoms across the alkene. He further goes on to explain how to compare heats of hydrogenation for related alkenes. Hydrogenation reactions are exothermic, and more substituted alkenes (more stable alkenes), because they already begin at a lower energy, tend to release less energy upon hydrogenation and therefore have lower heats of hydrogenation.
