I would like to wish everyone a Happy & safe New Year! ♥
This was a beautiful moment to see new Mom F23 following her instincts in offering the first bites of fish to E23!! Many viewers were wondering if F23 would take the fish that M15 would bring in and fly off the nest and eat it and leave the baby. Well that did not happen! M15 flies in with the first of two fish. After leaving the first one, F23 did eat a small amount but left the rest of the fish on the nest. After M15 brought the 2nd fish, F23 got up and began to feed E23 for the first time!
It was a beautiful and tender moment watching how F23 offered up tiny pieces of fish and saliva and patiently offered bites to the little one. The hatchlings have poor eyesight and they lack the muscles to hold their head up for the feedings so you will see E23 bobbling along. This coordination will improve in the next week. The parent also offers bites of food - the hatchling has to actually grab it and swallow. M15 came in and F23 took a break - he put some grass on E23 ♥ and then brooded.
I am so impressed with F23 throughout this entire incubation time, staying on the eggs, sharing incubation with M15 and letting him have so much extra time at night with the eggs. Once the eggs started to hatch, she became even more careful and stayed close to the nest. Now we see her feeding F23 the first of hopefully many many more feedings along with M15.
