A month after getting home from my first 2 week hospital stay and biopsy, it's finally time for surgery to remove the Mature Teratoma tumor from my chest. I'm excited after 4 long weeks of waiting and suffering the physical pains and mental challenges of prepping yourself to potentially wake up without a lung, or worse yet; potentially not wake up at all...
I had no idea what was awaiting me in surgery. Even the morning of, there were plenty of unknowns until they opened me up and started working. Surgery itself was a real battle, and what happens afterwards was well beyond...
This ride was about to get really rough....
I am now 7 months post removal of the tumor, but my procedures were brutal, and I'm still facing many challenges and struggles.
My hope is to put my story out there for others who may be unlucky enough to be in a similar situation. I wasn't able to find much of any info, stories, or patient experiences in my search for others who have had mediastinal Teratoma tumors. Or tumors that were surgically removed from ones chest and Thoracic space.. Yes, these are rather rare, but you would think as big as the internet is that there would be something useful to help me mentally prepare. Yet there was practically nothing. I aim to change that.
I thank God for my loving Wife. She was absolutely my anchor as I went through this. She was by my side every step of the way, and spent many months of sleepless nights with me during this process and during my recovery. Her and others in my family were amazing in their support, and I cannot thank them enough. I saw many others in this wing of the hospital, mostly older persons, who did not have the same support as I. It breaks my heart, I couldn't imagine going through that alone. If you or a loved one is going through something similar, I pray for a positive outcome. Be prepared to have support, and don't be afraid to ask for it either.
