"The word elegua originates from ẹlégbáa or ẹlégbára, which is another name for the deity Èsù. The deity is commonly called ẹlégbáa among the Yorùbá people in Lagos, where the city Ojuẹlegba is named after. The name ẹlégbà means “the one who acquires (justice and every other thing for humans and deities)”. Èsù is the deity of crossroads and justice, in Yorùbá pantheon. Christian missionaries misrepresented him as the devil. That said, it is important to know that there is no devil in Yorùbá belief system, evil is a by-product of human action or inaction."

Comments from Dr. Samuel Akinbo with assistance from Ógbéni Nathan Lugo an Ifa priest trained in Nigeria.
